Artificial Colorants:
  • Plant powders - from seeds, leaves, shells, stems, roots, and plant materials.
  • Dyes - color additives that add color to the product and can stain.
  • Pigments - color additives that adds color to the product but do not stain.
  • Lakes - mixture of pigments and dyes.
  • Micas - micas are natural minerals to provide shimmer and shine.  They are usually colored with dyes, pigments, or lakes.
  • FD&C colorants - are manufactured artificially. They are easy to use & control, and have a wide selection of colors. They are coded representing different colors.
    • FD&C = Food, Drugs, and Cosmetics
    • D&C = Drugs and Cosmetics
  • Oxides & Ultramarines - they are pigments artificially made in lab.

Natural Colorants:

Activated Charcoal (活性炭) - Gives the soap a deep black color, it is highly absorptive, and it removes free radicals from the surface.

Alkanet Root Powder (朱草根) - Gives the soap a pinkish red or bluish purple.

Annatto Seeds Powder (胭脂樹) - Gives the soap a rich orange color.

Black Walnut Hull (黑胡桃) - Gives the soap a rich brown color.

Calendula Powder (金盞花) - Gives the soap a light golden yellow color.

Cocoa Powder (可可) - Gives the soap a dark chocolate like color.

Comfrey Leaf (紫草) - Gives the soap a natural light green color.

Green Clay (綠石泥) - Gives the soap a light pale green color.

Gromwell Root Powder (紫草根) - Gives the soap a dark purple to blue color.

Indigo Powder (青黛) - Gives the soap a beautiful blue color.

Kaolin Clay (高嶺土) - Gives the soap a lighter color.

Leguminosae Powder (小槐花/抹草) - Gives the soap a light beige to pale yellow color.

Madder Root (茜草) - Gives the soap pink to deep rich red color depending the amount used.

Mugwort Powder (艾草) - Gives the soap a dark green color.

Neem Powder (苦楝) - Gives the soap a dark greenish brown.

Nettle Leaf (蝎子草) - Gives the soap a natural light green color.

Paprika Powder (紅椒) - Gives the soap an orange color.

Pink Clay (粉紅石泥) - Gives the soap a light pink color.

Rose Powder (玫瑰) - Gives the soap a dark brown color.

Safflower Powder (紅花) - Gives the soap a yellow and light orange color.

Sandalwood Powder (檀香) - Gives the soap a a purplish red color.

Spirulina Powder (螺旋藻) - Gives the soap a dark rich green color.

Turmeric Powder (薑黃根) - Gives the soap a dark yellow color.

Compare to synthetic colorants, natural clays and powders are much more difficult to control, they may not be consistent.  The results may not be consisitant, and may vary depending on the oils you use.

*Many clays and powders are also used for facial masks, soaps, and bath teas.
